THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA
Written in the summer of 1936 during the opening days
of the Spanish Civil War, and shortly before Frederico GarcĂa Lorca was executed
by Nationalist forces, La casa de Bernarda Alba is a play about a widowed
mother and her five daughters whom she rules with a strict hand, and who have never
had any contact with the opposite sex.
During the play, a group of men are heard singing outside as they make their
way to the fields for reaping. Asked to compose music for this (Lorca left
us only the lyrics), here both an instrumental and choral version
of my composition for this production. The choir was made up of members
of the Richmond Shakespeare Society and Marble Hill Singers,
and was recorded on 1st Sep 2007.
